A childhood dream of two sisters, Maeli Market has since grown to become so much more than just a store, but rather in its core, a space for connection and growth. Selling a wide range of Taiwanese products from traditional snacks, to uniquely shaped soaps and even classic tote bags, Maeli not only instills an ambition for cultural awareness within the community in Toronto, but also inspires a greater audience to learn and experience traditional Taiwanese delicacy.

"Tucked at the base of a North York parking garage is a market that sources all of its 5,000-plus items from Taiwan, including cookware, beauty products and, most important, food. Fridges and freezers are full of staples (fermented tofu, fried bean curd); shelves are stocked with instant noodles, bubble tea kits and fruit vinegars. In the centre of it all—and shaped like the island nation—is a kitchen serving to-go snacks (tea eggs, popcorn chicken), bento boxes and soft serve in flavours like papaya milk."

We collaborated with Toronto-based Suulin Architects to intentionally design a space that best represented Taiwan: from the bamboo lanterns, our mountainous backdrop, and our kitchen that's shaped as the island.
