Last Friday, May 23, we gathered at Maeli Market for a delightful evening of hands-on culinary fun at our Crystal Jelly & Alkaline Dumplings Workshop — and what a night it was!
That tradition lives on today in the form of zongzi (粽子), sticky rice dumplings wrapped in leaves and filled with sweet or savory fillings.
In celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival, we invited families, friends, and food lovers to explore the beauty of Taiwanese traditions through two very special treats: shimmering crystal jelly dumplings and classic alkaline dumplings (鹼粽).
Under the guidance of our instructor Susan from Thermomix, participants rolled up their sleeves to shape golden alkaline dumplings, lovingly filled with sweet red bean paste. Next came the fun and colorful craft of making crystal jelly — translucent, jewel-toned creations packed with juicy fresh fruits like kiwi, pineapple, and berries.
Throughout the evening, the room was filled with laughter, curiosity, and the comforting aroma of glutinous rice and oolong tea. Guests also got to taste savory Hakka-style Guo Zong and sip on a refreshing cup of Si Ji Oolong Tea from Maeli Market, paired with premium Taiwanese tea by Sian Te — the perfect way to wind down after the workshop.
It was more than just a cooking class, it was a celebration of heritage, togetherness, and creativity. Whether it was your first time making dumplings or a nostalgic trip down memory lane, we’re so grateful you were there to share the experience with us.
Thank you again to everyone who joined us and brought your energy and warmth with a deeper appreciation for the flavors and stories behind the Dragon Boat Festival. Stay tuned for more!
